The call for increased voluntary commitments is particularly hollow with the closing this week of the new UW Psychiatric hospital opened a year or so ago. They could not keep the beds full, not because there are not involuntarily committed patients who need the care, but because of a lack of public defenders. The connection puzzled me because why would that be a problem? Its because involuntarily committed people need legal representation on an ongoing basis because there commitment needs to he renewed in court every 90 to 180 days. If they cannot be provided counsel for these hearings the law mandates that they be released rather than be kept in perpetual commitment.

The whole system is just fucked from top to bottom.
